How District Energy Systems Work

District energy systems generate & distribute heating, cooling, & power through strategic networks of pipes underneath designated streets

  • These networks interconnect buildings of all types

  • Larger systems have multiple plants connected to a common network

  • Dedicated personnel operate, maintain & monitor the system continuously

  • The larger scale of district energy provides increased efficiency, improved economies & the ability to implement new technologies more effectively

DISTRICT ENERGY

What Is District Energy?

District energy systems generate thermal energy (heating and/or cooling) & sometimes power from a centralized facility & distributes it to multiple buildings through a network of underground pipes.

District Energy: The Best Kept Secret
District Energy has been used for 100+ years delivering reliable heating and cooling to buildings located in urban centers and campuses. Building benefits include capital avoidance, budget predictability, reduced operational risk & increased building space.

Heating Services Red color overlay photo showing the inside of a CenTrio Heating Plant

Service is provided according to the building’s heating specifications. Typically, a heat exchanger is installed to isolate the district & building systems. If district steam is provided to the building the customer can choose from steam, hot water or a combination of both.

Cooling Services Blue color overlay photo showing the inside of a CenTrio Cooling Plant

Service is provided according to the building’s cooling specifications. Typically, a heat exchanger is installed to isolate the district & building systems. The district system will interface with the building control system allowing temperature adjustments.

Power Generation Services Yellow color overlay photo showing our (CHP) cogeneration unit at our CenTrio plant at LSU.

Electricity is typically provided as part of a Combined Heat & Power system where heat from the electricity generation is captured to provide heating and/or cooling significantly improving efficiencies. The electricity can be used for plant equipment and campus buildings.

OUR OFFERINGS

Diverse Energy Solutions for Buildings & Campuses

We develop, design, build, own, operate, maintain and expand district heating/cooling systems serving all building types, including operating systems for municipalities, universities, healthcare centers, and more.

  • Connecting New and Existing Buildings
  • Public-Private Partnerships
  • Infrastructure Investment/Modernization
  • Greenfield/Brownfield Energy Development

Connect to the District System Network

New/existing buildings eliminate investing capital for heating/cooling equipment. No connection fees, we fix the monthly fee and pass through the costs (no mark-up) to produce your energy usage.
